In the final part of this series pairing some of the winners of 2018 UK Games Expo awards with tasty recipes, I look at a game that is almost as good as going outside for real and won people’s choice in best new strategic card games for 2018. Hope you enjoyed this Expo series – let us know what you would eat with these games in the comments below.
Arboretum
In Arboretum, 2-4 players earn points by creating lovely pathways for visitors to their arboretums. Starting with 7 cards in hand, players can draw 2 cards and place a tree card in their arboretum. When the deck has run out, players compare what’s left in their hands to decide who scores each of the 10 colours of trees. The highest card value in an individual colour set in hand allows a player to score 1 point per tree in a path of trees that begins and ends with the same colour or 2 points if the path consists entirely of trees in that colour. This simple concept is challenging to master and leads to a short game that you’ll want to play again and again!
The fabulous colours of trees in this game got me thinking about autumn and maple syrup and what goes best with maple syrup? Pancakes! Enjoy and watch for sticky fingers whilst gaming.
Pancakes – American style
Ingredients
- 135g plain flour
- 1tsp baking powder
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 2 tbsp caster sugar
- 130ml milk
- 1 large beaten egg
- 2 tbsp oil
- Fruit and maple syrup to serve
Method
Sift the dry ingredients into a bowl. In a separate bowl, mix the milk, egg and butter. Add to the dry ingredients and whisk until there are no lumps. Heat a small amount of oil or butter in a large frying pan on a medium/high heat until sizzling. Spoon the ingredients into the pan, I find 1 large ladleful makes a good size pancakes. Cook until golden brown both sides and cooked all the way through. Serve with fruit and lashings of maple syrup.
